Swimming

As part of the National Curriculum 2014, all schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

Currently at Poulton Lancelyn, our Key Stage Two children participate in a block course of swimming with Pool to School, at Poulton Lancelyn, in October. Each child attends a small group session for 30 minutes for 5 days.

Children who need further swimming support in Upper Key Stage Two have extra sessions to support their development towards National Curriculum objectives.

Since 2017, schools have been required to publish how many Year 6 pupils have met the National Curriculum requirements relating to swimming and water safety.

Overall Year 6 (2024-25) Swimming performance:

-          81% achieved NC

-          81% achieved 25m

-          90% achieved Range of Strokes

-          81% achieved Self Rescue
