Oracy
At Poulton Lancelyn, we understand the importance for our pupils to improve their levels of oracy. We want our pupils to be able to succeed in the world with effective communication skills.
We recognise that children who communicate well are more likely to form good relationships with other children and adults, therefore it is important that our children are able to listen to others, and respond appropriately. We aim to model good communication to pupils whilst also providing them with the skills and opportunities needed to be effective communicators in the future.
During EYFS, the children are given opportunities to talk and develop their communication skills using a range of activities including ‘talk time’ at the end of each day in F2. Within Y1, Y2 and Y3, the pupils have explicit oracy lessons, where they develop a range of different progressive skills such as using correct tone, volume and body language when communicating. They also learn the characteristics of a good listener. From Y4-Y6 opportunities are planning throughout the year for pupils to display and further develop the oracy skills they have learnt.
